Penina Hotel & Golf Resort, the iconic and historic hotel frequented by international music and film stars

I recently had the pleasure of revisiting one of the Algarve’s most legendary hotels: the Penina Hotel & Golf Resort, a true landmark in Portugal’s tourism history and an enduring symbol of elegance, tradition and warm hospitality. Located just outside Portimão, this hotel is steeped in fascinating stories and has welcomed some of the world’s most celebrated music, film and sports icons, as well as royalty. One of its best-known anecdotes is Paul McCartney’s stay in 1968, when he composed the song “Penina” during his time at the hotel — immortalising it in the Beatles’ folklore.

Since opening its doors in 1966, Penina has held the honour of being Portugal’s very first golf resort, setting a new standard for luxury tourism in the Algarve. Sir Henry Cotton, the renowned British golfer, designed its 18-hole championship course, which remains a magnet for golfers from around the world. At the resort’s respected golf academy, I had an inspiring lesson with José Lourenço, one of Cotton’s former pupils — an experience I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone keen to improve their swing or simply fall in love with the sport.

Classic architecture, five-star service and timeless charm

Penina’s timeless charm is reflected in its classic architecture, elegant décor and impeccable attention to detail. From families and couples to solo travellers and beloved pets — everyone is welcome here and treated to warm, attentive service that makes every stay feel truly special.

A dreamy beach and moments of pure relaxation

One of Penina’s greatest assets is its proximity to the stunning Alvor Beach — renowned for its clear waters and endless golden sands. The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle and an exclusive beachfront area for guests, complete with sun loungers, umbrellas and the Dunas restaurant — the ideal spot for fresh seafood and grilled fish by the ocean.

A culinary journey through local and international flavours

Food lovers are spoilt for choice at Penina, with five restaurants celebrating everything from regional Algarvian delicacies to fine international dining. Le Grill is the jewel in the crown, offering a gourmet experience curated by executive chef Bernard Lussiana and pastry chefs Coral Lawson and Armando Gaio.

Some of my highlights included the crab croquettes, fresh tiger prawn ceviche, steamed sea bass with homegrown lime leaves, classic Sole Meunière, and a fragrant monkfish tagine with cherry tomatoes and chermoula sauce. Each dish showcases the freshness of local produce and the kitchen’s respect for authentic flavours.

    Desserts that delight and surprise

Desserts at Penina are works of art in themselves: from the iconic flambéed crepes Suzette — which caused a sensation on my Instagram — to the rich crème brûlée, warm tarte tatin with ice cream, and the show-stopping chocolate surprise cake. This indulgent creation — a fondant hidden inside a dark chocolate sphere that melts when warm white chocolate and ginger sauce is poured over — is a guest favourite, and once you taste it, you’ll understand exactly why.

At L’Arlecchino, the hotel’s Italian restaurant with a pool view, I couldn’t resist the creamy shrimp risotto, wild mushroom and truffle risotto, Sicilian cannolo with lemon sorbet, and the classic tiramisù — a dream come true for dessert lovers. Meanwhile, at the Sir Henry Cotton Club, I quickly became addicted to the perfectly grilled fish with mashed potatoes and the hotel’s famous pastel de nata, often considered one of the best in the Algarve.

    Premium facilities and memorable experiences

Beyond its world-class golf courses, Penina offers a professional golf academy, five tennis courts, a large outdoor pool, a lively kids’ club — the Kangaroo Club — and all the five-star amenities needed for a luxurious, stress-free holiday. Every corner of this resort is designed to create treasured memories, whether it’s a family getaway, a romantic escape or a relaxing break with friends.

    Always a reason to return

Penina Hotel & Golf Resort is more than just a destination: it’s a living testament to Algarve hospitality, where history and modern comfort intertwine to offer an elegant, unforgettable experience surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. There are countless reasons to return — and like me, once you visit, you’ll find yourself longing to come back again and again.
